The Belgrade Community Library and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Montana State University are set to host a presentation focusing on how the design of Montana towns can contribute to the prevention of chronic health conditions. Titled "Preventing Chronic Health Conditions through Activity-Friendly Community Design," the event is scheduled for April 17 at the library's new location at 205 E. Main St. It will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and is open to the public at no cost.
The presentation will cover the ways in which community design can encourage healthy lifestyles, such as encouraging walking and biking, and ensuring access to healthy food options. Jennifer MacFarlane, a research associate at MSU's Western Transportation Institute, will provide insights into the local health landscape and efforts to prevent chronic illnesses. She will discuss the role of land use and transportation planning in preventing conditions like diabetes and heart disease.
MacFarlane is part of WTI's Mobility and Public Transportation Team and brings nearly 20 years of experience in public health to the event. Her work has included programs for disease prevention, tobacco control, and family planning. The event, which also has the support of the Belgrade Community Library Foundation, aligns with wider efforts to promote a healthier transportation system and community.
Those interested in attending are encouraged to register online in advance, although walk-ins will be accommodated. OLLI at MSU is a division of MSU Academic Technology and Outreach, providing lifelong learning opportunities to the community.
