Gallatin College expands laser and optics program with AmeriCOM sub-contract

Gallatin College at Montana State University has received an $800,000 sub-contract from the American Center for Optics Manufacturing (AmeriCOM) to enhance its photonics and laser technology program. The funding will be used to create a new optical metrology lab, focusing on teaching students about radiometry and the utilization of light to examine the physical properties of objects. This lab will complement existing facilities and may serve as a resource for local industries through collaboration with MSU's Electrical and Computer Engineering Department.

Mark Craig, director of the photonics and laser technology program, expressed that the new lab, funded by AmeriCOM, will bring "additional and highly relevant training" to students and herald collaboration opportunities between industry partners, Gallatin College, and MSU. Furthermore, the college is considering introducing a one-year applied science certificate and dual enrollment options for photonics and optics courses.

Gallatin College MSU is among five colleges in the U.S. providing optical technician training under sub-contracts with AmeriCOM, a nonprofit designated by the U.S. Department of Defense to advance optic manufacturing technologies. AmeriCOM President and CEO Dave Shelton anticipates their continued partnership will create pathways for careers in precision optics manufacturing, especially in photonics and laser technologies.

Established in 2016, Gallatin College MSU's Associate of Applied Science in Photonics and Laser Technology is Montana's sole two-year optics program. To date, the program has produced 35 graduates, all of whom have successfully secured positions in southwest Montana and nationwide in the photonics and optics sectors.

Current curriculum includes instruction on geometric and physical optics, circuits, electronics, logic and laser design, and characterizing laser systems. The college's program prepares students using industry-standard equipment for work in Montana's optics field, known as a Regional Technology and Innovation Hub by the Economic Development Administration.

The sub-contract will additionally support partnerships with local organizations like the Montana Photonics and Quantum Alliance and the Montana Headwaters Tech Hub, aiming to develop smart photonic sensor systems and drive economic opportunities in Montana. Stephanie Gray, dean of the college, emphasized the positive impact of the AmeriCOM sub-contract, stating it provides "needed equipment and new curriculum with a focus on future workforce development."
