Students in the Jake Jabs College of Business and Entrepreneurship at Montana State University recently engaged with Makoto Iyori, the consul general of Japan based in Seattle. The visit highlighted the longstanding relationship between Montana and Japan and aimed to broaden students' perspectives on international business.

Iyori, who has held the consul general position since 2023, addressed about 75 students in an Introduction to International Business class led by instructor Thomas Lechner at the Bozeman campus. “I am doing my best to present students with as many international perspectives as possible in hopes of igniting their curiosity to explore the world,” Lechner stated, emphasizing the importance of his teaching approach.

During his presentation, Iyori spoke about the historical and economic ties between the United States and Japan. He noted that Japanese companies have created over a million jobs in the U.S. and are keen to expand partnerships. "The U.S. and Japan have been important allies since the end of World War II," Iyori remarked. He also underscored the significance of technological investments and Montana's exports of coal, wheat, and beef to Japan, where there is a substantial market for American beef.

Iyori mentioned Mike Mansfield, a former U.S. senator from Montana, who significantly contributed to Japanese-American relations. Mansfield's legacy continues through the Mansfield Chair at the University of Montana. Students inquired about diverse topics, including bison meat in Japan, tariffs, the influence of Formula 1 racing on tourism, and study advice for Tokyo.

Following the class session, Iyori met with Brian Gillespie, the dean of the business college, alongside members of the Office of International Programs. The discussions centered on strengthening the university's ties with Japan. Touring local businesses like Montana Photonics, Iyori also visited other companies in Billings.

Gillespie highlighted the significance of Iyori's visit in aligning with the college's international goals. “Welcoming Consul General Iyori to campus was a great honor for Montana State University as we forge a continued partnership with Japan,” he said. He expressed anticipation for ongoing collaboration, fostering global educational opportunities for students.
