The Yellowstone Art Museum in Billings will present an exhibition titled "Northeastern Asia and the Northern Rockies: Treasures from the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Daryl S. Paulson Collection." The exhibition is set to run from April 18 to August 3 and is co-curated by Todd Larkin, a professor of art history at Montana State University.
The exhibition aims to explore the philosophical connections between northeastern Asia and the northern Rockies. It will feature a variety of objects, including Daoist scholar stones, Confucian painting tools, sculptures of Buddhist deities, and photographs of Asian settlements. The art and rituals of East Asian migrants working in the northern Rockies from 1850 to 1918 will also be showcased. Additionally, contemporary Asian American artists from the region will present their work.
The exhibition is supported by a $120,000 grant from the Henry Luce Foundation, awarded to the MSU Alumni Foundation in 2018. Larkin worked in collaboration with Stephen Little, the curator of East Asian art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, to assemble the collection and organize the show over a six-year period.
