Montana State University hosts diverse events celebrating Black History Month

Montana State University is organizing a series of events in February to celebrate Black History Month. These events, hosted by various clubs and organizations on campus, are open to the public.

The Black Student Union will present a free Hip Hop Bash on Monday, February 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. in Strand Union Building Ballrooms A and B. This musical tribute honors award-winning Black artists and is sponsored by the Dean of Students office with support from the Diversity and Inclusion Student Commons.

On Friday, February 14, the MSU Library will hold Douglass Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Strand Union Building’s Alumni Legacy Lounge and online. The event celebrates Frederick Douglass with music, birthday cake, speakers, voter registration activities, and more. The African Students Association at MSU will host its annual African Cultural Night on Saturday, February 22, at 5 p.m., also in the Strand Union Building ballrooms. This free event highlights drama, music, cultures of Africa and its diaspora under this year’s theme “Sankofa,” meaning “back to our roots.”

A Black history concert by the One O'Clock Jazz Ensemble is scheduled for Monday, February 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Howard Hall’s Reynolds Recital Hall. Tickets cost $5 for MSU students and $15 for general admission; pre-kindergarten through grade twelve students can attend for free. ASMSU Films will screen several films as part of Black History Month celebrations in Procrastinator Theater within SUB. Admission costs $2 for students and $5 for community members.

“42” will be shown at 6:30 p.m. on February 6th through 8th.

“Black Panther” follows each night at 9 p.m.

“Sing Sing” screens at 7 p.m., February 27th through March first.

“The Color Purple” (2023 version) shows nightly at nine during those same dates.
