FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Montana Highway 1 rock removal complete

ANACONDA & PHILIPSBURG, MT – The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) and Hi-Tech Rockfall Construction are pleased to announce completion of the MT 1 Slope Stability project. Approximately 4.4 million pounds (2,200 tons) of rock was removed from the Flint Creek Pass area on Montana Highway 1 (MT1).

“This project went smoothly, and we didn’t face supply issues, so the project was able to be completed this fall,” said Matt Straub, MDT Missoula District Engineering Project Manager. “We would like to thank the traveling public and the communities of Philipsburg, Anaconda, and the Georgetown Lake area for their patience during construction.”Additional work included repair or replacement of rockfall mitigation structures through an approximate 1-mile stretch of Flint Creek Pass. This will help reduce the potential occurrence and severity of crashes related to falling rocks.

MDT maintains rockfall mitigation structures such as fences, barriers and netting to help keep motorists safe while traveling on Montana’s many roads and highways. MDT performed proactive rockfall mitigation work called “rock scaling” to help keep rocks off the highway. The previous rockfall mitigation structures were installed in 2008.

“I’d just really like to thank the general public for their patience through this late- season project,” said Vincent Kruse, Hi-Tech Rockfall Construction Project Manager. “It really was a collaborative effort between us, MDT, R&S Johnson Construction, and Mountain West Holding Company. I appreciate all their work.”

The project began in September 2022 and was completed in November 2022. For more information about this project, visit https://www.mdt.mt.gov/pubinvolve/mt1ss/.

Don’t Crowd the Plow!

While driving, be on the lookout for snowplows and give operators room to work. Many plows are hit by private vehicles each winter, with the potential to cause harm to all parties involved. The plow truck and operator are taken out of service immediately following an incident.Drive safely this winter and keep these tips in mind:

· Don’t pass a plow when the TowPlow is deployed. The operator will periodically rotate the TowPlow back in line with the truck to allow vehicles to pass.

· Be aware that, where there is one plow working, others may be nearby. The snow cloud created by one plow may obscure presence of additional plows in adjacent lanes.

· When approaching a snowplow from the rear, reduce speed immediately.· When approaching an oncoming plow, don’t crowd the centerline.

· Be patient. Plow operators know where they can pull over to let vehicles pass, but remember, the road in front of the plow is likely not as clear as the road behind it.

MDT has tools to help plan for conditions so you can reach your destination safely.
