Joe Shaw, a distinguished professor at Montana State University (MSU) and director of its Optical Technology Center, has been honored as the 2025 Alumnus of the Year by the Wyant College of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona. This accolade recognizes Shaw's significant contributions to optical sciences through research, educational leadership, and development of an optics industry ecosystem in Montana.
Thomas L. Koch, dean of the Wyant College, stated, "Joe Shaw’s many commitments to education and advancement of the optics field are both remarkable in scope and impressive in impact." Koch praised Shaw's leadership as an ambassador for optics and his support for the University of Arizona.
Shaw holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Alaska, a master's from the University of Utah, and a doctorate from Arizona. He expressed gratitude for being recognized among prominent alumni: "Being highlighted as alumnus of the year among such incredible people is an amazing honor that is exciting and humbling."
At MSU, Shaw has developed advanced degree programs in optics and supported undergraduate education in this field. His research focuses on optical remote sensing instruments for environmental studies, leading to over 340 publications and multiple patents.
In Bozeman, Shaw played a key role in establishing a high concentration of optics companies. The Montana Photonics and Quantum Alliance he helped create includes more than 40 companies employing over 1,300 people. His efforts have built a skilled workforce to meet sector demands.
Shaw is recognized as a fellow by SPIE and Optica. His honors include prestigious awards like the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. He authored "Optics in the Air," aimed at making optics accessible to broader audiences.
Todd Kaiser from MSU commended Shaw's dedication: “Dr. Shaw truly believes in the mission of a land-grant university.” Kaiser noted Shaw's willingness to engage with diverse audiences about optics.
