The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Montana State University is organizing a virtual forum on homelessness in the Gallatin Valley. The event, titled “Urban Camping and Homelessness in the Gallatin Valley: A Brief History, Stories from the Field and Strategies for the Future,” will take place on Friday, Dec. 12, from noon to 1:30 p.m. via Zoom. The forum is free and open to the public.
Homelessness in Bozeman increased by 35% between 2019 and 2021, a rise that occurred during the pandemic. This has led to challenges for residents and an increase in urban camping—where people live in makeshift shelters within city environments.
Heather Grenier, chief executive officer of HRDC, will speak about policies, programs, and partnerships aimed at addressing homelessness and creating future solutions. Chief civil attorney Anna Saverud and Ben Bailey, neighborhood services and code compliance program manager for the City of Bozeman, will also participate in the discussion.
Those interested must register by 11 a.m. on Dec. 12 to attend. Registration can be completed online at www.montana.edu/olli/offerings or by calling 406-994-6646. Participants will receive an email with a Zoom link and login instructions before the event.
According to organizers, “Friday Forums, organized by OLLI at MSU, are held on the second Friday of each month from September to May.” OLLI at MSU operates as part of Academic Technology and Outreach at Montana State University.
