The Museum of the Rockies at Montana State University is set to open a new multimedia exhibit titled “Becoming Jane: The Evolution of Dr. Jane Goodall” on Friday, October 3. The exhibit, produced in partnership with the National Geographic Society and the Jane Goodall Institute, highlights the life and work of Jane Goodall, who passed away on October 1 at age 91.
A member-only opening event will take place this evening at 5:30 p.m., featuring a video message recorded by Goodall for museum members. The event will also include family activities, a ribbon cutting, and a discussion with primatologist Isabel Behncke.
The exhibit traces Goodall’s journey from her early aspirations to study animals in Africa through her scientific research in Gombe, Tanzania, to her later roles as an activist and mentor. It will remain on display through January 18, 2026.
Christopher Dobbs, executive director of the museum, stated: “We join the world in mourning the loss of a legend: a champion for conservation and the natural world. Her passing makes it all the more important to carry on her message. By hosting this traveling exhibit, we honor the remarkable legacy and memory of Dr. Jane Goodall, celebrating her life’s work and the inspiration she continues to share with the world.”
Exhibit features include multiscreen presentations introducing visitors to Goodall’s research and virtual chimpanzees; a replica of her research tent; hologram-like projections sharing her memories from Gombe; immersive projections of Gombe Stream National Park; interactive augmented reality experiences such as matching chimpanzee vocalizations; updates on ongoing conservation efforts in Africa; and opportunities for visitors to pledge support for sustainability initiatives promoted by the Jane Goodall Institute and National Geographic.
The Museum of the Rockies is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with access to “Becoming Jane” included in regular admission fees.
