Montana State University will host national mathematics competitions for high school students on November 5 and 13 at its Bozeman campus. The events are part of the American Mathematics Competition (AMC) 10/12 series, developed by the Mathematical Association of America and organized locally by MSU’s Science Math Resource Center in the College of Education, Health and Human Development.
The AMC 10 exam covers mathematics through grade 10, while the AMC 12 includes trigonometry, advanced algebra, and advanced geometry but does not include calculus. Both tests consist of 25 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 75 minutes.
The exams given on November 5 (Test A) and November 13 (Test B) follow the same format and rules. Each test has unique questions but is designed to be equally challenging. Students may choose to participate in one or both contests.
Eligibility for the AMC 10 is limited to students through 10th grade who are under 17 and a half years old. The AMC 12 is open to students through 12th grade who are under 19 and a half years old. High-scoring participants may be invited to take the American Invitational Mathematics Examination. Gift cards will be awarded to top scorers.
“Competitions are challenging yet presented in a friendly and supportive environment. Organizers hope the contests will help students gain self-confidence, recognize their talents and foster a love for mathematics,” according to event organizers.
Registration is free for Montana students. The deadline is October 29 for the November 5 test, and November 5 for the November 13 test.
