Montana State University will host a DARPAConnect Regional Pop-Up event on Wednesday, September 24. The event is scheduled to take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Strand Union Building on the MSU campus in Bozeman. Registration is required for attendance, with an in-person fee of $100 and a free virtual option available for some sessions.
The gathering aims to connect representatives from industry, academia, and startups with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). Participants will have opportunities to learn about engaging with DARPA program managers, as well as insights into what makes proposals successful.
“Montana State University is proud to host DARPA on campus and provide this opportunity for Montana innovators to connect with some of the nation’s top problem-solvers,” said Alison Harmon, vice president for research and economic development at MSU.
DARPA serves as the main research and development agency for the U.S. Department of Defense, focusing on areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, and cybersecurity.
In-person attendees can participate in Q&A sessions that cover program timelines, funding opportunities, partnerships, and networking with DARPA officials and other innovators.
DARPAConnect began in 2022 through a partnership with the Applied Research Institute. Its goal is to expand DARPA’s connections with small businesses and educational institutions across the country.
Montana State University reports annual research expenditures of about $288 million in 2025. The university holds an R-1 designation from the Carnegie Classification system due to its high level of research activity. This status supports local economies by creating jobs, awarding contracts to businesses, and applying research outcomes that benefit both Montana residents and people nationwide.
