Photos captured by Montana State University’s visual media team are prominently displayed on the cover and within the 2025-26 edition of the Almanac of Higher Education. The publication, released in August by The Chronicle of Higher Education, presents statistics and information about colleges and universities across the United States.

The Chronicle recently began highlighting a different university in each annual issue. This year, Montana State University (MSU) was selected as the second featured institution, following Bates College. MSU is also noted as the first public university to receive this recognition.

A photograph of Montana Hall taken through a window by MSU photographer Colter Peterson appears on the magazine’s cover. Inside, there are 14 additional images shot by Peterson, photographer Marcus “Doc” Cravens, and Kelly Gorham, director of visual media at MSU. These photographs depict various aspects of campus life, academics, athletics, classroom and laboratory activities, as well as campus-wide events.

“Our visual media team considers it an honor to bear witness to the daily life of Montana State University. We operate like the photo department at a newsroom and coordinate closely with the MSU News Service, Office of Admissions and the marketing team,” Gorham wrote in accompanying text published in the Almanac. “Our photographers and video creators strive to make artistic photos but prioritize storytelling to give the viewer an insight into the lives of our students, faculty and researchers.”

Copies of this year’s Almanac edition can be purchased online along with covers from previous years at https://store.chronicle.com/collections/the-almanac-of-higher-education.
