Montana State University and the city of Bozeman announced on April 6 that they will provide free collection of unwanted bulky items for MSU students and spring graduates through the annual Don’t Curb Your Crap program. The service, which typically charges $20 per item, will be available from April 20 to May 31 via the city’s Solid Waste Division.

The initiative aims to help students dispose of large items such as couches, desks, and mattresses in a safe and convenient way. It also seeks to reduce clutter on neighborhood curbs during the busy spring move-out period. Students can request a pickup by filling out a form on the city’s website, where they must confirm their student status and provide details about their items.

“We’re always excited to partner with each other to bring this program to the student community; Don’t Curb Your Crap is a wonderful example of the positive effects of campus and city partnerships and the good they can bring to our communities,” said Rebecca Eberlin, program manager for Off-Campus Student Life. “It also keeps our curbs free of clutter in the spring, which is always a plus.”

Don’t Curb Your Crap began in 2019 as a collaboration between Montana State University’s Office of the Dean of Students, Associated Students of MSU, Bozeman’s Neighborhoods Program, and Solid Waste Division. “We’ve had over 800 students arrange for bulky item pickup since the start of this program. That’s hundreds of couches, desks, mattresses and other items each year that are getting disposed of quickly and properly, rather than staying outside where it can be a hazard,” said Emily Kiely, community engagement coordinator at the city of Bozeman. “We’re excited to help students and neighborhoods through this program.”
