Montana State University’s men’s tennis team earned a narrow 4-3 win against Weber State on April 5 at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center in Bozeman. The match was decided after nearly five hours when sophomore Eddie Biss clinched the final point at No. 6 singles.
The outcome is significant for Montana State, as it improves their overall record to 6-11 and gives them a tie-breaker advantage over Weber State in the race for a Big Sky Conference Tournament berth, which begins April 23.
Biss secured the decisive win with his serve, prompting his teammates to rush onto the court in celebration. “When (his serve) goes in, it feels quite good,” Biss said. “It was so fun out there.” Head coach Mateus Ceolin commented on Biss’ progress: “It’s awesome to see how much he’s improved… He works extremely hard. We saw all of that coming out of him today.”
The Bobcats took an early lead by winning the doubles point, with Yassin Elarousyy and Max Calaquian claiming a quick victory at No. 3 doubles and Camille Chantron with David Ismanescu securing another win at No. 2 doubles. Ceolin credited this performance as pivotal: “That made all the difference… If we lose doubles today we lose 4-3 again.”
After dropping matches at No.1 and No.2 singles, Montana State rallied through victories from Ethan Masselis and Chantron before Weber regained momentum with a win at No.5 singles. The match ultimately rested on Biss’ ability to finish strong under pressure—a situation he had faced unsuccessfully before but embraced this time around: “I’ve been in one of those situations before and was on the wrong side of it,” Biss said.
Looking ahead, Montana State remains in contention for one of six spots in the Big Sky tournament and will host Sacramento State next Friday.
