Montana State University’s track and field teams secured second place finishes for both men and women at the Big Sky Indoor Track & Field Championships, held at the ICCU Dome in Pocatello, Idaho. The Bobcats won five events and earned 11 podium spots on the final day of competition.
Key victories came from Caroline Hawkes in the women’s 400 meters, Sydney Brewster in women’s shot put, Easton Hatleberg in men’s shot put, Tatum Richards in women’s pole vault, and the women’s 4×400-meter relay team composed of Peyton Garrison, Tilde Bjerager, Giulia Gandolfi, and Hawkes. These performances contributed to a total of 135 points for the women and 91 points for the men.
Hailey Coey was named Women’s Most Outstanding Performer following her record-breaking performance on Friday. “Coey (long jump) and Brewster (shot put), who currently hold top-16 marks nationally in their respective events, will await the final conference championship results from around the country as they look to lock in their qualifying marks for the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Ark., on March 13-14,” according to Montana State’s athletics department.
In addition to event wins, several athletes achieved notable individual performances. Hawkes set a new school record with a converted time of 52.86 seconds in the 400 meters after four consecutive runner-up finishes at previous conference meets. Brewster defended her indoor shot put title with a throw of 17.18 meters on her last attempt. Richards cleared 4.18 meters to claim gold in pole vault for her second straight Big Sky title.
The Bobcats also saw strong showings from other athletes: Kalei Moravitz finished second in the women’s 800 meters; Tamia Ramos placed third in triple jump; Sam Ells earned bronze in men’s 3,000 meters; and Blaise Snow took third place in men’s 800 meters.
The women’s relay team set a new facility record at ICCU Dome with an unconverted time of 3:36.62.
