Tricia Binford, head coach of the Montana State Bobcats women’s basketball team, announced on May 1 the addition of junior-college transfer Ebele Mbagwu to the team’s 2026-27 roster.
Mbagwu joins Montana State after playing a season at Miles Community College under former MSU standout Sam (Fluss) Kortum. Kortum was part of the 1993 Big Sky Conference championship team and is a member of the MSU Athletic Hall of Fame.
“Ebele is an incredible human being, who we initially recruited out of high school,” Binford said. “It was great for her to have the opportunity to develop under Sam Kortum at MCC last year. She is selfless, energetic and lights up a room.”
During her freshman season with Miles Community College, Mbagwu started in 31 games and played over one thousand minutes. She averaged 13.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game, finishing with a total of 425 points for the season. She also led her team in steals with 121 and had more than one hundred assists.
Binford said: “She is a fast, athletic, disruptive and dynamic guard. She defends 94 feet, rebounds, gets to the foul line and creates opportunities for teammates. This young lady will be a great addition, as she represents everything it means to be a champion Bobcat and teammate.” Mbagwu earned Mon-Dak Conference Player of the Week honors after scoring twenty-eight points along with twelve rebounds in a win over Dawson Community College during that season.
In addition to her performance on court, Mbagwu was named first-team all-conference while helping MCC achieve fifteen wins during their campaign in conference play in 2026. Off court she was recognized academically by being named to the President’s Honor List for maintaining a GPA above three point five during fall semester.
Mbagwu attended Stockdale High School in Bakersfield where she played under coach Richard Garofalo and received several awards including SWYL First Team All-League honors in two thousand twenty-two as well as tournament MVP recognition earlier in her career.
