Montana State University is set to host rock climber John Long on Friday, September 19, at the Student Wellness Center. Long will lead a hands-on climbing clinic and discuss his career with attendees.

Long is recognized as an award-winning author and was one of the founding members of the Stonemasters, a group known for shaping adventure sports culture in California during the 1970s. His career includes achievements such as being part of the first team to complete a one-day ascent of The Nose on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. He has also contributed significantly to bouldering and free soloing, which involves climbing without ropes or safety equipment.

The clinic will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Student Wellness Center’s climbing wall and is open to MSU students, faculty, and staff regardless of experience level. Those interested must have a current Top Rope Skill Check on file with the facility before participating. Climbing gear will be available at no cost from the center, though participants may use their own equipment if preferred. Registration for this session is required.

Following the clinic, Long will give a public talk about his experiences in climbing from 7 to 9 p.m., also at the climbing wall. This event does not require registration and is free for all attendees.
