Bozeman has been named the top college town in the United States for the third year in a row, according to an April 15 announcement from RentCafe.com.
The ranking is significant as it highlights Bozeman’s continued appeal to students and its recognition on a national scale. The city placed first among 244 college towns evaluated by RentCafe, with Pullman, Washington; Clemson, South Carolina; Laramie, Wyoming; and Gainesville, Florida rounding out the top five.
RentCafe.com said in its press release that “most students enrolling in college in 2026 belong to Generation Z – digital natives who are reshaping the traditional path from education to career.” The company added that Gen Z spends more time than other generations on sports, wellness and social events. As a result, they look for universities with strong extracurricular offerings and towns with venues for entertainment. “Bozeman, Montana, takes the crown for the third year in a row thanks to its blend of affordable education and good quality of life,” according to RentCafe.com. “Tuition at Montana State University is around $8,500 for in-state students, which is well below the national average of $18,396. At the same time, MSU places great emphasis on research and innovation with very strong programs in biotech and engineering.”
Montana State University (MSU) recorded a spring enrollment of 16,373 students this year—its sixth consecutive semester of growth—and last fall enrolled a record-high 17,165 students. The university offers over 250 undergraduate areas of study and more than 115 graduate programs. MSU leads research funding within Montana with annual expenditures exceeding $288 million according to its official website. Additionally, MSU ranks among the top five percent of global universities per the Center for World University Rankings according to its official website.
RentCafe analyzed affordability (including tuition fees and cost of living), livability (such as arts venues per capita and air quality), and educational factors like graduation rates when compiling their list. Wellness was highlighted as important for many Gen Z students choosing where to attend college: “Here [in Bozeman], locals and visitors can enjoy biking, hiking and more,” noted RentCafe.com.
MSU operates as Montana’s land-grant university focused on research efforts addressing key challenges facing communities according to its official website. It also contributes through volunteer work aimed at enhancing lives statewide according to its official website. As Montana’s land-grant institution serving both state residents and those beyond state borders according to its official website, MSU continues expanding opportunities through outreach initiatives.
