Montana State University will host Bill Hilf, board chair of the Allen Institute for AI and American Prairie, as part of its Orser Executive Speakers Forum this fall. Hilf’s presentation, titled “Prairie-Size Opportunities: Translating Emerging Tech into Profit and Purpose,” is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 5 p.m. in the Strand Union Building’s Procrastinator Theater. The event is free and open to the public and will take place in a fireside chat format.
Hilf’s talk will cover his work on applying emerging technologies for societal benefit. At the Allen Institute for AI, a nonprofit based in Seattle, he focuses on ways artificial intelligence can be used for public good, including applications in climate modeling, wildlife conservation, and maritime intelligence aimed at protecting marine animals and ocean ecosystems. At American Prairie, Hilf helps guide efforts to develop what is envisioned as North America’s largest nature reserve—a 3.2 million-acre area supporting wild bison and local communities in the Northern Great Plains.
He plans to discuss how to identify significant opportunities, lead through uncertain situations, and help businesses achieve economic success while also addressing global challenges.
“We are thrilled to welcome Bill Hilf to our campus and hear his insights on how to combine a drive for business and technological advancement with mission-driven change,” said Brian Gillespie, dean of the Jake Jabs College of Business and Entrepreneurship. “His career sets a great example for our students with lofty professional goals who also want to follow their passions and make an impact.”
Hilf has over 25 years of experience in developing software products. His previous roles include positions at IBM, Microsoft, and HP where he worked on launching open-source software initiatives and updating cloud platforms. Between 2016 and 2024, he served as CEO of Vale Group (formerly Vulcan Inc.), managing investments across various sectors such as aerospace, real estate development, film production, brain science research, among others.
In addition to his technology career, Hilf spends time exploring remote wilderness areas and writing fiction; his first science fiction novel is expected later this year.
The David Orser Executive Speakers Forum was established by David B. Orser—a 1966 MSU graduate—in 1988 with the aim of inspiring students in the Jake Jabs College of Business and Entrepreneurship toward responsible business leadership. The forum brings notable speakers each semester; past participants have included Heidi Browning from the National Hockey League; Tim Solso from General Motors; and Dave Stephenson from Airbnb.
